Timberline Trail - Circumnavigate, Mt. Hood - This stunning circuit weaves through lush forests, wildflower-filled alpine meadows, and rugged glacial valleys, with constant views of Oregon’s highest peak towering above. River crossings, sweeping ridgelines, and ever-changing terrain make it an unforgettable journey through the heart of the Mount Hood Wilderness. (any section or in its entirety (43 miles, 9,985 elevation gain).
Loowit Trail - Circumnavigate, Mt. Saint Helens - One of the most dramatic hikes in the PNW. This rugged loop winds through lava fields, wildflower meadows, rushing glacial streams and the raw volcanic landscape left behind by the 1980 eruption. Every mile reveals sweeping views of the crater and surrounding Cascades, making it a challenging and unforgettable journey through one of the most powerful landscapes in the region. (any section or in its entirety (32 miles, 6,400 ft elevation gain).
Alpine Lakes Wilderness - Landscape built for Adventure! This is where I will be tramping about mostly this coming season! Granite peaks rise above hundreds of crystal-clear lakes, alpine meadows burst with wildflowers in summer, and every trail seems to lead to a hidden view worth the climb. From peaceful forest paths to rugged high-country ridgelines, it’s one of the most spectacular places in the Cascades to experience true Pacific Northwest wilderness. I am happy to curate a route to suit all needs/abilities. (Anywhere from 13 miles to 56 miles. Elevation gains range from 7,000 ft to 12,200 ft)
Cispus Basin, Goat Rocks Wilderness - Goat Rocks feels like stepping into the alpine heart of the Cascades. The trail climbs from deep forest into sweeping meadows bursting with wildflowers, before opening into a dramatic basin beneath rugged volcanic peaks. Flowing creeks, views of Mount Adams, and quiet camps along the PCT make it one of the most rewarding backcountry destinations in the PNW. (47.5 miles, 12,870 ft elevation gain)
Mt. Margaret Backcountry - This remote network of trails passes alpine lakes, quiet forests, and flower-filled ridges with constant views of Mount St Helens, Mount Adams and the surrounding volcanic peaks. With fewer crowds and miles of pristine wilderness, it’s the perfect place to experience the raw beauty and recover of the PNW. (32 miles, 7,750 ft elevation gain)
Wallows, Eagel Cap Wilderness (not Cascades) - Oregon’s Alps - In the far northeast corner of Oregon the jagged peaks and turquoise lakes of the Wallows Mountains rise dramatically above the valley floor. You’ll be trekking to glacier carved lakes, climbing high passes and spotting mountain goats along the way. Every step delivers big views and true backcountry solitude. (30 miles to 48.5 miles. Elevation gains range from 5,800 feet to 11,600 feet)
Danny aka PB&JP
Over the past decade, I’ve been chasing miles across the Pacific Northwest (and beyond), and some of the most iconic trails in the country. What started as day hikes turned into big loops, long traverses, and a healthy obsession with carrying everything on my back.
Before help building the trails that I walk on today, I served in the 82nd Airborne Infantry Division. My deployment taught me the importance of preparation, and resilience is built step by step. My backpacking experience includes the Camino Portuguese, the Pacific Crest Trail, Rim-2-Rim-2-Rim in the Grand Canyon, the Teton Crest Trail (loop) in the Grand Teton National Park, Colorado’s Four Pass Loop, Goat Rocks’ Cispus Basin, the Loowit Trail around Mount St. Helens, the Timberline Trail around Mount Hood, Trans-Zion trail, Pinhoti Trail in Alabama, through hike of the Foothills Trail in South Carolina, and traversed the creeks and trails of Arkansas’s Ozark Highland Trail. Earned some miles in the Wallows, Capitol Reef Nation Park and way too many adventures in the Rockies to begin to even tell you here (maybe around a campfire).
I’ve summited South Sister, Mount Hood, Mount St. Helens, Middle Teton, Mount Whitney and over a dozen 14er’s. I’ve explored terrain ranging from Moab and Arches to the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, the Wind River Range Yellowstone and the Seven Lakes Basin in the Olympic National Park.
Above the Alpine is built on real miles, earned experience, and a deep respect for wild places.
