Carefully Selected Gear for Questionable Decisions on the Foothills Trail

Foothills Trail: Seemed Like a Good Idea at the Time

There’s a very specific kind of confidence that shows up before a big hike. The kind where your pack is sitting there, fully loaded… and you’re just staring at it like, “Yeah… I nailed this.” That’s exactly where I’m at right now.

Next up: 77 miles on the Foothills Trail.

Why the Foothills Trail?

  • Long enough to feel like an adventure

  • Wild enough to feel remote

  • Manageable enough to convince yourself it’s “not that bad"

From what I’ve seen, it’s got everything - waterfalls, river crossings, ridgelines, and that classic green tunnel hiking the Southeast does so well. Basically… just enough beauty to distract you from your life choices.

The Plan (Loosely Defined)

The goal? Start walking… and eventually stop 77 miles later. Somewhere in between:

  • Camp near rivers

  • Chase a few waterfalls

  • Try not to overthink the milage

  • Definitely overthink the milage

I’ve got a rough plan, but like most good trips, it’s flexible. Because nothing says “great time” like pretending you’re in control while the trail slowly humbles you.

The Gear Situation

I’d love to tell you everything is perfectly dialed. And honestly… it kind of is. But there’s always that lingering feeling:

  • Did I pack too much?

  • Did I forget something obvious?

  • Why does this feel heavier than it did in my living room?

I’ll be running a setup that’s built for comfort, efficiency, and just enough questionable decisions to keep things interesting. Full gear breakdown coming soon - after the trail tells me what I got wrong.

What I’m Expecting

Best case:

  • Flow state hiking

  • Empty trails

  • Unreal waterfall stops

  • That perfect mix of tired + happy

Worst case:

  • Humidity hits like a wall

  • River crossings get “spicy”

  • Blood sucking ticks turn me into a zombie

Realistically? Somewhere right in the middle - and that’s usually where the best stories are made.

Why This One Feels Different

There’s no big headline here. No massive peak. No “you made it” moment. Just 77 miles of showing up and putting one foot in front of the other.

Follow Along

I’ll be sharing the highs, the lows, and the “why did I bring this” moments along the way. If you’ve ever thought about hiking the FHT or just want to see how this plays out - stick around. Because right now, everything feels dialed. Check back in a few days… we’ll see how that holds up.
